Entomology and Death, a Procedural Guide
Published in Spiral-bound by Forensic Entomology Associates (December, 1990)
Authors: Neal Haskell, E. Paul Catts, and E. Paul Catts
Average review score:

Great Fun and Intererest for the Amataur & Pro
This book is great! While this book is geared towards the real professional, such as a MD, ME, or Police investigator, (not me) this book is totally readable, interesting for the layperson or student of entomology. This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite entomological text!! While I am not normally morbid, this book brings out my morbid side - death & bugs can be fun and interesting!!!

Entomology & Death: A Procedural Guide
Entomology & Death: A Procedural Guide edited by Neal H. Haskell and E. Paul Catts, is a compilation of information collected from well known experts in the field of forensic entomology. In addition to editing the text, several chapters were written by the editors. Their work as well as the other contributing writers' works is well written and organized and the manual is superbly illustrated with line drawings. The introductory chapter covers background information on terminology, definitions, and educational requirements for those who practice medicolegal or forensic entomology. Also, the manual contains historically significant entomological research that provides a foundation for applying its techniques to legal investigations. Concise case histories are used to illustrate how insects significantly contribute to criminal investigations. The manual describes some basic structural biology, metamorphic processes, habitats, and other environmental factors that affect the development of forensically important arthropods. There is an excellent discussion of blow fly development and how it may be used as a time of death indicator. In addition, entomological data analysis from evidence collected at the scene is discussed. Some information regarding death scene procedures, security and the treatment of evidence is covered as well. Proper collection techniques and preservation methods are discussed and also given is a detailed list of materials and equipment needed by the investigator. Useful reference information such as several formulas for mixing standard killing and preserving solutions are discussed. Also, presented are laboratory procedures for raising insect larvae. The manual concludes with some information on ethics, guidelines for testifying in court and a helpful glossary complete with numerous references cited. This manual is an exemplary text, and I would highly recommend it for police officers, crime scene technicians, investigators, medical examiners, and forensic scientist. Presently, published information on forensic entomology is extremely limited. This manual definitely fills a void in the field of forensic entomology.

Hard to Find!
It took me a couple years to get this book since it was out of print and all. Glad I found it. Great guide and actually some very good reading. This book made me reconsider getting back into this field. Scraping maggots off the dead can be fun!

The Other Voice: A Companion to the Text of "the Course" Chapters 1-15 (Miracles Studies Book)

The Other Voice : A Companion to the Text of 'the Course'
Along with A Course In Miracles, this is yet another extraordinary "helper" from above. I read it everyday and use it with my several-times-daily A Course In Miracles study. It's richness is truly beyond words, it's helpfulness is indispensible.

THE OTHER VOICE, indeed
"The Other Voice" is exactly that! After reading the original Course almost 20 years ago, I put its content on a "back burner" as too convoluted. The received text of this book crystalized its message in gentle poetic language. The book is a must for any who are haunted by the mysterious Course.

i can't follow the book, i need help
i would like someone to give me some ideas on the book, a course in miracles

The $50,000 Business Makeover Marathon

Why Is It Called ¿The $50,000 Business Makeover Marathon¿?
After listening to this series and applying what I've learned I have a few reasons why master copywriter and business consultant Drew Eric Whitman selected the title.

Maybe it relates to the fact that I would have paid $50,000 to him and the 10 other experts that have literally super-charged my business and increased profits. And at that price, it would have been a steal.

Or maybe the $50,000 references what average business owners can add to their annual profits after listening. I know in my case, $50,000 would be a low estimate for the increase in business I expect over the course of the next year as a direct result of listening to this course.

Whatever the reasoning behind the title, in my opinion this is material that every person running or thinking of starting a business should own. It delivers essential business and marketing information (some of which I've never heard before but works almost like magic), and it spoon feeds it to you in such a way that you not only completely understand it, but you're excited and can't wait to start applying it to your business immediately.

I've had many nights where I've only grabbed a few eyefuls of sleep since owning this. But I want to thank Drew Eric for giving me the information and motivation to get in and do something that's responsible for literally putting more money in my pocket while making it fun.

Now you can learn jealously guarded business secrets
Who is this Drew Eric Whitman? And how can he help me?

Those were my thoughts as I read his captivating ad for The $50,000 Business Makeover Marathon. I was spell bound. And you will be too.

Being an adventureous sort, as all entrepeneurs are, I decided to take the plunge and purchase it. You know what? It was everything he said it would be, and more!

Drew, if you read this, thank you. We may never meet but you have changed my life and business.

After listening and putting into action many of the tips(lessons, really) I have seen an amazing change in my professional and personal affairs.

I own six other tape programs on sales and marketing and this one is unique. Get it now. While you're thinking about it.

Better hurry. Your competition may already have this.

Yours in Success,

Energetic, Interesting, Motivating, VALUABLE.
I confess to buying too many business tapes. I am also too often disappointed by the quality of the production as well the content.

THESE tapes, however, are fantastic. The speakers are all interesting to listen to - not boring. No fluff. Recorded in a studio, so you can ALWAYS hear the speakers. The topics will be valuable to any small to medium size busines owner or marketing executive who wants to expand and grow their business.

You may have heard SOME of this material before, but you haven't heard ALL of it -- and it's all in one powerful package.

IMHO, it's worth a listen -- again and again.

Gettysburg
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (September, 1992)
Authors: Frank Haskell, William C. Oates, Glenn Lafantasie, Paul Andrew Hutton, and Franklin Asretas Haskell
Average review score:

A view from both sides!
This book starts off with a great and fair introduction to the two stories that are to be told by William Oates of the Confederacy and Frank Haskell of the Union. Written by Glenn LaFantasie the lengthy introduction writes about both Civil War authors Oates and Haskell. He is careful in explaining that each man's history, background and present situation which may have had an effect on their writing. After the introduction William Oates of the 15th Alabama structures his story first by giving an historical view of the army movments north and south as a prelude to the battle of Gettysburg. His writing of such a history could probably have been eliminated while his story of marching to Gettysburg and his role in the battle should have taken precedent. Oates offers his controversial view of the battle which is interesting in many ways. Not only does he tell his story but he tells it painted his way. Being a reader of many Gettysburg related books, it is easy to find fault with some of Oates' story. Though this is what makes this book interesting. We need to know what Oates considered and thought was how things went instead of guessing. We need something to stand on and his story though it may not be accurate is very descriptive and essential for understanding the battle.

While Oates offered his view of the 15th Alabama's fight to take Little Round Top, a great story is to follow written by Frank Haskell. Unfortunately, Haskell tends to waste the immediate structure of the battle like Oates had earlier. He tells the readers where such a corps was placed, who was advancing, etc. This boring non-relating story he tells doesn't tell about him or his action in the battle. After this quick and non essential tale of the battle of Gettysburg, Haskell finally gets to his involvement in the fight. This is where Haskell gets interesting. He is very fair on his descriptions and how he associates with other Generals during the conflict. His tale of Pickett's Charge and the carnage is excellent. I really liked Haskell's discipline in not reacting to telling about a battle on the field that he didn't take part in or had not witnessed. His graphic tale of Pickett's charge and the movements covered certainly placed myself right along with him on the field. He builds up Day #3 of Gettysburg very well and comes to a complete end to his story without dragging the reader.

For the novice reader of the battle of Gettysburg, I wouldn't recommend this book as it is not generalized enough to understand without reading more of the basic battles of the three day saga. For the advanced reader looking for more historical insight written by two soldiers that were actually there, this is an excellent book and I recommend it completely.

A great book written by soldiers who fought in the battle
Gettysburg is a well written book by two soldiers who fought in the battle. COL William C. Oates fought for the Confederate side and LT Frank A. Haskell fought for the Union side. Each soldier captured his side of the battle in great detail. The stories are well written and easy to read. It is very interesting to read about the different viewpoints of the battle. COL Oates gives a great analysis of why the Confederates lost the battle and how they could have won it. I highly recommend this book for all fans of the Battle of Gettysburg.

A remarkably objective and detailed report from a union view
In order to fully appreciate this minute by minute account you should first see the movie"gettysburg" and visit the national park. The detail of how the soldiers were placed comes to life and even more amazing is the recounting of how the soldiers felt, what they were thinking and the general's strategies in leading their men. I highly recommend the audio tapes of this book.... If you've been there, if you've studied the battle, you will be completely mesmerized!!!

Ditto.
I too don't have time to write well thought out review. But I have recommended this book to so many people in exact (word exact should be bold, italicized and underlined) same words as reader who wrote above comments.

Don't be fooled by title-this book is unexpectedly profound.
I don't have time to write a well-thought out review, but since there isn't any, I will provide one comment. Among other things, this book could be a primer for anyone who is married, is contemplating getting married or having doubts about continuing in a marriage. This is a valuable book.

Adult-Child Research & Experience: Personal and Professional Legacies of a Dysfunctional Co-Dependant Family (Developments in Clinical Psychology)
Published in Hardcover by Ablex Publishing (January, 1993)
Author: Robert E. Haskell
Average review score:

You're Not Alone
Haskell's professional legacy is helpful from the resarch perspective and his personal saga gives the reader something through which we can all relate. An extraordinary volume that is very easy to follow. Each page from the author's life seems to bring us closer to the harshness of our own reality, a reality that many individuals have chosen to keep repressed. An invaluable resource which challenges our innermost thoughts through the disturbing realm of alcoholism to the conflicts involved in raising a family. For anyone who has ever suffered through a dysfunctional experience, this book makes you feel as though you're not so alone.

Agnes Martin
Published in Hardcover by Whitney Museum of Art (October, 1992)
Authors: Barbara Haskell, Rosalind Krauss, Whitney Museum Of American Art, and Anna Chave
Average review score:

Joy in Simplicity
Agnes Martin is one of the world's most respected abstract expressionist painters. Awarded the US National Medal for the Arts and many others, at 88 years young, she continues to paint daily in her Taos, New Mexico studio. This book highlights an extensive collection of her past and present work. The fascination of the work is that she is able to simplify and reduce the visual experience to very faint lines, grids, and bands of muted color on paper and canvas. The images in this book are not concrete, they are not bold, they are contemplative soft feminine brush strokes and fine graphite lines that can, if you allow them, produce a sense of calm, peace and joy. A true experience! If you are unable to go to Taos's Harwood Museum to see seven of her blue and white series all arranged in an octangal room constructed to house them, this book will introduce you to one great painter. Enjoy.

From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (December, 1987)
Author: Molly Haskell
Average review score:

DON'T LET THE TITLE PUT YOU OFF!
--there is absolutely nothing polemical or fanatical about this book, which is for film lovers--not just feminists. It is one of the best books on FILM (not just women in film) I've ever read, up there with Stanley Cavell's "Pursuits of Happiness," but much more direct and down-to-earth. Haskell is a fiercely smart, wickedly funny, and casually erudite critic with many extremely sharp observations. She's arguably both a better belles lettresist and a better critic than her (I believe???) one-time husband Andrew Sarris, a better-known and more prolific film critic. It's also hard to argue with her basic thesis: that the portrayal of women in film was better, not worse, in the studio era and prior to the sexual revolution--although this stands received film and feminist history alike on their heads. Haskell is a rare marvel and model: a feminist aesthete who is able to put art before politics without denigrating the importance of the latter. Unlike, say, Camille Paglia, she neither denies nor quasi-celebrates the misogyny of great or simply entertaining films, yet neither does she make political correctness a criterion of artistic achievement or see misogyny where none exists. On the contrary, some of the best passages of the book are accounts of the strong and complex female characters of directors such as Josef von Sternberg, Karl-Theodor Dreyer, and Howard Hawks, among others. A totally engaging blend of classical liberalism and belles lettres/punchy journalism.

I remember this book from high school
I was in the 11th grade at the time and I was just getting immersed in my fascination with movies and film theory. I read every book I could find on film studies.

That is when I stumbled upon this book (first edition) in my school's library. After reading this book, I never looked at the history of films, film themes, etc. in quite the same way.

As the years went by, I had read other film theory books that dealt with femininity and feminist thought, but this one always remained my favorite. So when the opportunity presented itself where I could add this book to my personal film library I was more than glad to.

I think I like this book so much because it introduced me to a series of films that while important in the women's studies and cinema may have been forgotten in the annuls of overall film theory and criticism. One outstanding example is "Letter from an Unknown Woman." The depth with which Ms. Haskell discusses this film immediately made me want to go out and see the film; and indeed I did.

I highly recommend this book not just to read but as an addition to any film lovers' library.

Exceptionally thought-provoking!
Along with Susan Douglas's work, Growing Up Female in the Mass Media, this book is one of the most honest and clearly organized arguments about the way women are depicted in film. For anyone who wants to see what women are screaming about...this book will wake you up. Haskell does a fascinating job of expressing (and cleverly) what has been done to women in the media...how they've been portrayed and how they've been made to be prostrate creatures in film. If you buy it, you'll obsessively begin to notice how true this stuff is on your television set, in your films...everywhere in our society!

>I read almost the whole book in one weekend! We have already started planning to do the workshop. I have read many marketing books in the past, including having written a video script for Jay Conrad Levinson, but none of them walk you through the process like Dr. Revenue does. It really is interactive and has taught me as much this weekend what I need to get done as any work I have done in the past 6 months.

Best, honest, and most important approach
